Modes

Story Mode

Story mode has Five different stories the player can choose from (excluding the Final Story and the secret Metal Sonic Story). Each story is named after and is about a different character. The stories are: Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, and Jax. The player faces off in a set order of battles (battles depend on story) with cutscenes or dialogue in between. Completing all the stories will unlock NiGHTS as a playable character in versus mode.

Arcade Mode

In Arcade mode the player battles all ten starter characters and has four different difficulty settings. Novice, Intermediate, and Expert are available at the start, but to unlock the Fourth difficulty (called Champion) the player must beat Expert mode with all starter characters. If the player beats Champion mode with all story mode characters, metal sonic will be unlocked in versus mode. If you beat it with all twelve starter characters, the metal sonic story will be unlocked.

Versus Mode

In Versus mode you can play a 1 on 1 or 2 on 2 match with friends or CPUs. You can play as all fourteen characters (or te, if you haven't unlocked the four secret ones), and all fourteen stages (or ten if you haven't unlocked the four secret ones). Playing 20 versus matches unlocks Egg Robo as a playable character in this mode.

Training Mode

Training mode is an opportunity to learn special moves and practice with all sixteen characters.
