There are about 10 levels based on the stories in the comic series. When beginning a game, the player must select "New Game" or load a saved game file. While creating new game data, the player will be asked to enter their name before saving and beginning the game.
There are five playable characters in this game. Sonic, who is speed-based, although his speed is limited in the first level due to being shackled by Lerich. Tails, who can fly and can manipulate and operate machinery. Knuckles, who is power-based and can glide, dig and climb or smash certain walls. Amy uses her hammer as a weapon and to whack giant buttons to open certain types of doors. Cream and her pet Chao creature, Cheese, though used less frequently and usually playable in special missions.
When your health meter becomes empty, typical of video games, a Game Over screen will appear. During Level 1, the screen shows Lerich tying up your character with dark magic vines with text above that says "You will stay here FOREVER!!!". After level one, when a character dies, the screen will show your character falling to the floor, with the background rotating around the character and going black the second the he/she is killed (characteristic of the Kingdom Hearts series) . After the character is shown lying dead, you will then be given an option whether to continue or load a new game. Rings are said to be a part of this game, but only as currency and for super-charged attacks.
This game features several cutscenes, some that are just still images with narrations, some that are fully animated, but with the characters speaking without voices, but only through speech balloons with text (like very many Role-Playing Games) and fully animated cutscenes, complete with voiceovers. The actual gameplay has different types of levels, such as in the form of basic platformers, various missions, and some segments of gameplay in the form of rhythm games, featured in certain levels where a combination of buttons are to be pressed in the correct amount of time to avoid and perform certain actions.
